As anticipation builds for Apple’s first foldable smartphone, the so-called iPhone Fold, new details have emerged regarding its unconventional physical layout. According to a recent leak, the device may feature a button configuration that breaks from traditional iPhone design to align more closely with Apple’s tablet ergonomics.
A Top-Side Volume Control
The leak, originating from Chinese source Instant Digital and reported by MacObserver, claims the iPhone Fold will position its volume buttons not on the left side, but directly on the top right edge of the chassis. This design mirrors the layout found on the iPad mini. The power button, which reportedly integrates Touch ID, and a dedicated AI or camera button are said to remain on the right side.
This shift is purportedly a strategic move by Apple to make the device feel more familiar to users when opened and used in a tablet-like format. However, it is also driven by internal engineering constraints.
Engineering Over Aesthetics
The leak provides a technical rationale for the clean, button-free left side. “The logic board is located on the right side,” the source states, “and the idea is to avoid running cables under the display to power buttons on the left. The left side is therefore completely clean, with no physical buttons, leaving almost all the space available for the screen structure and the battery.”
Camera and Authentication Details
Further details suggest the front-facing camera will be housed in a single, discreet circular punch-hole, moving away from the Dynamic Island design. This aligns with reports that the iPhone Fold will forgo Face ID authentication, relying instead on Touch ID embedded in the power button.
While Apple has not commented, the most credible rumors point to an official unveiling in September 2026, during the company’s annual iPhone launch event. If accurate, the iPhone Fold’s design choices represent a significant departure, prioritizing the open-tablet experience and internal component efficiency over traditional smartphone form factors.
