Asif Calls Naqvi ‘Most Powerful’ Minister, Skips Cabinet

Asif Calls Naqvi 'Most Powerful' Minister, Skips Cabinet

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has described Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi as the “most minister” in the federal government, asserting that on several matters, Naqvi is not even accountable to the Prime Minister.

In a television interview, Asif stated that despite holding the interior portfolio, Naqvi appears to operate outside the conventional cabinet framework. The defence minister noted he had observed Naqvi attending only two or three cabinet meetings since his appointment.

Asif further highlighted Naqvi’s sparse presence in the legislature, remarking that the interior minister had attended Parliament only a handful of times. He added that if Naqvi himself was dissatisfied with the current system, “then perhaps we should all go home.”

These comments come in direct response to Naqvi’s recent public statements criticising Pakistan’s governance structure. The interior minister had warned that the existing system has grown too weak to tackle the nation’s challenges, suggesting that without fundamental changes, the country would face the same problems a decade from now.

Call for Administrative Reforms

Naqvi has also advocated for the creation of new administrative units or provinces, arguing that such restructuring is essential for improving governance and securing long-term development. He contends that the current system has outlived its effectiveness and requires urgent overhaul.

The exchange highlights growing tensions within the federal cabinet regarding governance reforms and the role of key ministries in the decision-making process.
