The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has apprehended Adil Ahmed, a human trafficker involved in the Mauritania boat tragedy, from Muzaffargarh. Ahmed had allegedly received 4 million rupees from Rehan, a resident of Gujrat, who later lost his life in the tragic incident.
According to FIA officials, Rehan was trafficked from Pakistan to Dubai and then to Senegal via Ethiopia. From Senegal, he was transported to Mauritania, where he boarded the ill-fated boat. Adil Ahmed, the accused, had been evading arrest since the incident and was declared a fugitive after Rehan’s family filed a case against him. Following his arrest, Ahmed will be transferred to Gujranwala for further legal proceedings.
The Mauritania boat tragedy occurred on December 16 when a vessel carrying illegal migrants bound for Spain capsized, resulting in the deaths of 50 migrants, including 44 Pakistanis. Survivors of the incident recounted harrowing details, alleging that human traffickers from Senegal, Mauritania, and Morocco subjected the migrants to brutal violence. Four boys who died of hunger and thirst were reportedly beaten with hammers on their heads and faces before being thrown into the sea.
The incident has underscored the urgent need for stronger action against human trafficking networks. The FIA’s arrest of Adil Ahmed is being hailed as a significant breakthrough in the ongoing efforts to dismantle such criminal operations. Authorities continue to investigate the broader network involved in the tragedy, aiming to bring all perpetrators to justice and prevent future incidents of this nature.
This case has drawn widespread attention to the dangers faced by migrants and the exploitative practices of human traffickers, prompting calls for stricter international cooperation to combat this global issue.
