Greaves Leads Windies to 239-5 After Rain-Hit Day

Greaves Leads Windies to 239-5 After Rain-Hit Day

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad — Justin Greaves delivered a composed unbeaten 64 to steer the West Indies to 239-5 at stumps on a rain-shortened opening day of the second and final Test against Pakistan at Queen’s Park Oval on Sunday.

Following his match-winning performance with the ball in the first Test last week, Greaves showcased his trademark ease and composure at the crease, anchoring the innings during a challenging day for the hosts.

Greaves Survives Drop and Injury Scare

The right-hander’s only lapse came just after reaching his half-century when Pakistan captain Babar Azam put down a straightforward chance at leg-slip off spinner Sajid Khan. At that point, Greaves was visibly struggling with a left leg injury sustained while completing a sharp run, which required lengthy on-field treatment.

Despite the discomfort, Greaves formed a vital sixth-wicket partnership with Roston Chase, who remained unbeaten on 36. The pair added 66 runs before the close of play, and Greaves will hope for a return to full mobility when he resumes his innings alongside his captain on the second morning.

Pakistan Fight Back in Middle Session

Greaves arrived at the crease in mid-afternoon with the score at 91-3, following Kavem Hodge’s dismissal as Khan’s first wicket of the day. Pakistan sensed an opportunity to break the West Indies’ resistance when Amir Jangoo fell to a leg-side catch, giving debutant pacer Ubaid Shah his first Test wicket with the opening ball of a new spell.

However, Greaves and Shai Hope steadied the innings with a 53-run stand until seamer Mohammad Ali, the most impressive bowler on display, bowled Hope off the inside edge for 29. That wicket left the innings delicately poised at 173-5 before Greaves and Chase guided the hosts to a respectable close-of-play total.
