French actress Juliette Binoche expresses joy at presiding over the 78th Cannes Film Festival. In a statement, she expressed her excitement to share “life’s moments” with the jury and the public from May 13 to 24 without bounds. The organizers of the Cannes Festival have confirmed that this is the second time two women have presided over this prestigious jury. They stated that an “international star” is leading the jury, following in the footsteps of Sophia Loren replacing Olivia de Havilland in the 1960s.
Binoche remarked, “In 1985, I set foot on stage for the first time, and now, 40 years later, returning to this prestigious role is a great honor for me.” Accepting this responsibility, she expressed humility. Binoche is an internationally renowned actress, popular not only with audiences but also with critics. She previously won awards at Cannes for Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami’s film “The Wind Will Carry Us,” as well as accolades at Venice and Berlin Film Festivals. She also won an Oscar for “The English Patient” in 1997.
For Binoche, Cannes is a special occasion as she began her journey with “Rendez-vous” in 1985, which propelled her to fame. She is also a social activist, raising her voice on human rights, women’s rights, and environmental issues. The official selection for the festival will be announced in mid-April, with last year’s festival awarding the Palme d’Or to the outstanding film “Titane.” Cannes 2025 is set to take place from May 13 to 24, eagerly awaited by cinema enthusiasts worldwide.
