The popular Indian television show “Kaun Banega Crorepati,” hosted by the legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan, has become a beloved program, captivating audiences with the promise of life-changing fortunes. For some fortunate individuals, the show offers a chance to win substantial cash prizes, potentially altering their lives forever. This was the case in 2011 when Sushil Kumar from Bihar emerged as the first contestant to win the grand prize of five crore rupees during the show’s fifth season. Kumar’s victory catapulted him into the limelight, making him a household name across India.
However, the substantial winnings did not translate into lasting happiness or stability for Kumar. In a candid Facebook post shared in 2020, Kumar revealed the challenges he faced following his win. The sudden influx of wealth led him down a troubled path, marked by substance abuse and exploitation by those around him. His personal life also suffered, with his marital relationship becoming strained. Kumar recounted instances where he felt coerced into making donations after being invited to various events.
In a moment of frustration, Kumar once confided to a journalist that he had exhausted all his winnings and was now making ends meet by selling milk from cows he had raised. This statement was taken at face value, and the subsequent spread of this story led to a withdrawal of support from many of his acquaintances, who ceased inviting him to programs.
Contrary to popular belief, Kumar was not entirely destitute. He clarified that, after tax deductions, he only received 3.50 crore rupees. Currently, Kumar is employed as a government teacher of psychology and actively participates in environmental initiatives, including tree planting campaigns. His journey serves as a cautionary tale, highlighting the potential pitfalls that can accompany sudden success and the importance of maintaining one’s path amidst newfound wealth.
