In a significant political move, the leadership of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has directed its officials holding government positions in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to relinquish their party roles. This decision aims to facilitate the reorganization of the party in the province.
Salman Akram Raja, the PTI secretary general, announced the directive on Tuesday after meeting with the party’s founder, Imran Khan, who is currently incarcerated. Speaking outside Adiala Jail, Raja emphasized that this step is intended to empower Junaid Akbar, the recently appointed PTI president for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, to effectively revitalize the party’s provincial chapter.
Junaid Akbar replaced Ali Amin Gandapur, the Chief Minister, who had resigned from his party position the previous month. Raja noted that Khan expressed his unwavering support for loyal party leaders and dismissed those expelled from PTI as irrelevant to the party’s future. This comment was interpreted as a pointed reference to Sher Afzal Marwat and Fawad Chaudhry, who were recently ousted from the party.
Raja also mentioned that PTI members who failed to communicate with the party leadership during a crucial parliamentary vote on the 26th Constitutional Amendment would be offered a personal hearing. He further reported to Khan about the party leaders’ recent visit to Sindh, during which Khan reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for the rights of the people of Sindh.
Additionally, Raja voiced concerns about the conditions faced by Khan in custody, stating that he would formally address the Chief Justice of Pakistan regarding the matter. Despite the alleged lack of basic amenities in his cell, Khan reportedly expressed his dismay over Pakistan’s recent defeat against India in the Champions Trophy, as related by his sister, Aleema Khan.
In a separate development, PTI Central Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram criticized the government’s fiscal management, accusing it of squandered public resources and warning against the political grooming of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. Akram contended that such political maneuvers would only exacerbate the country’s instability and asserted that the public, increasingly aware due to Khan’s influence, would resist any undemocratic impositions.
The unfolding political dynamics in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa signify a critical period for PTI as it seeks to consolidate its influence and address internal challenges amidst a complex national landscape.
