You might have walked past someone wearing them without a second glance. The thick-framed Ray-Ban or Oakley glasses, quietly introduced to the French market in 2022, were once a niche gadget for tech enthusiasts. In 2026, they are a mainstream fashion accessory, championed by Kylie Jenner and sold at major retailers for under 200 euros. But behind the stylish rebranding lies a powerful, AI-driven recording device that is fueling a wave of privacy violations.
Sales have exploded. According to Agence France-Presse, over 7 million pairs of connected glasses were sold globally last year—a sevenfold increase from 2024. Meta’s successful marketing strategy has reframed the device as a “premium fashion accessory,” effectively obscuring its true function. While they can correct vision and block sunlight, these glasses are primarily designed to make calls, send messages, listen to music, provide real-time translation, live stream, and most critically, capture photos and videos of everything the wearer sees, often in total secrecy.
A Surveillance Device Disguised as a Fashion Statement
Unlike a smartphone, which is difficult to use for covert recording, Meta glasses offer absolute discretion. A user can activate photo or video mode with a nearly invisible button press or a simple voice command. The only visual cue is a tiny, easily missed light indicator and a minuscule camera lens embedded in the thick frame near the hinges. This seamless design has made illegal image capture and the violation of privacy alarmingly simple.
Testimonies from women filmed without their knowledge are multiplying. One woman, Zoé, told TF1 she discovered a video of herself, captured by a stranger’s Meta glasses, that had amassed 5 million views across social media platforms. “I didn’t know this technology to film with glasses existed at all, so I didn’t suspect a thing,” she explained, describing her shock upon discovering the footage.
In more disturbing cases, the glasses are becoming a tool that facilitates sexist and sexual violence. Feminist content creator Anna Baldy, known as Grande Bavardeuse, has collected testimonies from dozens of women who were secretly filmed, some while undressed. One woman reported that her gynecologist was wearing the connected glasses during an examination.
The Hidden Cost of AI Training
The privacy intrusion extends beyond individual creeps. An investigation published in February by two Swedish newspapers and cited by Libération revealed the unsettling reality behind the AI. Journalists spoke with AI workers in Nairobi, Kenya, whose job is to annotate, sort, and classify gathered by Meta glasses to train the algorithm. These workers reported seeing people who appeared to be filmed without their knowledge, alongside deeply private content including sexual acts, nudity, and bank details. “We tell ourselves that if people knew the extent of the data collection, no one would dare use these glasses,” they reported.
How to Spot If You’re Being Secretly Recorded
Identifying a recording in progress is difficult by design. The primary indicator is a small LED light on the top right of the frame, which turns on and blinks when video mode is active. A camera shutter sound also accompanies a photo. However, as Futura notes, these signals are practically imperceptible in noisy or brightly lit environments. Furthermore, despite Meta’s claims, some users have reportedly found ways to disable the warning light or simply cover it, rendering the recording completely invisible.
To counter this, some people are turning to technology. The Android application “Nearby Glasses” can alert users when it detects the Bluetooth signals of connected glasses within a radius of 3 to 15 meters.
What Are Your Rights If You’ve Been Filmed?
If you suspect you are being recorded, the first step is to confront the wearer, ask what they intend to do the footage, and remind them that distributing your image without consent is illegal, as previously advised by image rights lawyer Alexandre Blondieau to Le HuffPost.
If the video or photos are published online, the scale of dissemination dictates the severity of the legal prejudice and potential damages. “Being exposed on an account followed by millions of people is not the same as a profile with 300 followers,” Blondieau noted. A compromising or viral recording can result in a much more serious judgment and higher damages, provided you can prove a large audience viewed the content.
As France’s National Commission on Informatics and Liberty (CNIL) states, violating a person’s privacy “by fixing, recording, or transmitting, without their consent, the image of a person in a private place” is a criminal offense. The penalty can be up to one year of imprisonment and a fine of 45,000 euros.
