Teen Burned by Exhaust: Police Brutality Claim in Noisy-le-Grand

The hall of a residential building in the Pavé Neuf district of Noisy-le-Grand, Seine-Saint-Denis, became the scene of a controversial arrest on the evening of July 12. A video filmed by a resident, now central to an official complaint, shows a physical altercation between municipal police officers and a young man, followed by a serious injury claim.

In the footage, helmeted officers are seen struggling with a man in a red t-shirt. Moments later, a second individual, wearing a white top, approaches and is forcefully pinned to the ground. The amateur videographer can be heard reacting throughout the sequence, exclaiming, “Oh my God, the blunder!”

The Victim’s Account and Legal Action

The man in the white shirt has been identified as 18-year-old Azaria. Through his lawyer, Me Hosni Maati, he has accused the officers of disproportionate violence. Azaria claims that during the arrest, the police deliberately moved his leg against the hot exhaust pipe of a two-wheeled vehicle, causing a second-degree burn to his right calf.

Acting on these allegations, Azaria filed a formal complaint on July 16 with prosecutor Fanny Bussac. The Bobigny public prosecutor’s office, which handles cases involving law enforcement, is now tasked with investigating the incident.

Next Steps in the InvestigationThe complaint will trigger a judicial inquiry to determine the exact circumstances of the arrest. Investigators are expected to analyze the complete video footage, gather witness statements from other residents, and obtain medical reports documenting the severity of Azaria’s burn. The municipal police officers involved will also be interviewed to provide their account of the physical confrontation.

The case adds to the ongoing public scrutiny surrounding police intervention methods in the Seine-Saint-Denis region, with this particular incident now under formal investigation to establish whether the use of force was legally justified.
