Pakistan PM Directs Export Plan for Surplus Food to Gulf States

Pakistan PM Directs Export Plan for Surplus Food to Gulf States

PM Directs Comprehensive Action Plan

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed officials to formulate a comprehensive action plan for exporting surplus food items to Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. The directive, issued during a high-level meeting in Lahore, emphasizes that domestic food requirements must be “fully satisfied” before any exports proceed.

Food Security Review Amid Regional Dynamics

The meeting reviewed Pakistan’s national food security in light of shifting regional dynamics, including the ongoing Middle East conflict. Officials briefed the Prime Minister on current stockpiles and production levels, confirming that Pakistan maintains ample stocks with no shortage of essential commodities.

PM Sharif ordered strict monitoring of domestic demand and supply chains to safeguard local food security. “Complete monitoring of demand and supply is essential to ensure the country’s food needs are fully met,” he stated.

Seizing Export Opportunities

Highlighting disruptions in global supply chains due to regional conflicts, the Prime Minister noted increased export potential for Pakistani agricultural products in Gulf markets. He emphasized that Pakistan’s agricultural sector—encompassing crops, meat, poultry, dairy, and seafood—holds “significant export potential.”

The Prime Minister stressed that exports to “brotherly Gulf countries” must maintain high quality standards to enhance Pakistan’s trade reputation.

Logistical and Diplomatic Measures

To facilitate the export initiative, PM Sharif issued several key instructions:

  • The Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) must take necessary measures to facilitate exports via maritime routes.
  • A dedicated committee will review the food export situation on a daily basis.
  • Pakistani ambassadors and trade officers in Gulf countries are instructed to remain proactive in identifying and capitalizing on export opportunities.

Strategic Economic Move

This export push represents a strategic economic decision aimed at leveraging Pakistan’s agricultural surplus while strengthening trade ties with Gulf nations. The move comes as Pakistan seeks to stabilize its economy and increase foreign exchange earnings through enhanced exports.

The government’s dual focus on maintaining domestic food security while tapping into regional export markets reflects a balanced approach to agricultural trade policy amid uncertain global conditions.
