Paris: Over 1,100 Arrested in Year-long Crackdown on Crack Use
Paris police have reported the arrest of 1,141 individuals during a one-year campaign against crack cocaine use. These figures were released under the “Plan Crack” initiative, launched a year ago. A statement from Paris police highlighted the success of the ongoing campaign. Police presence has been maintained in areas where crack use is prevalent, with authorities striving to establish peace in public spaces through street mediation efforts. Additionally, 23 crack dens will be shut down by 2024.
The Paris prosecutor has disclosed that stringent legal actions are being taken against crack users. During this period, 43 individuals faced trafficking charges in court, while 285 were swiftly sentenced through expedited hearings. Police also mentioned providing alternative treatments for individuals struggling with crack addiction, directing 362 individuals towards medical care. Under the “Plan Crack,” 144 operations were conducted against illegal migrations in 2024, resulting in investigations of 1,399 individuals and administrative action taken against 317. Furthermore, 26 traffickers were deported from the country.
According to authorities, these measures have significantly aided in curbing crack use in northeastern Paris, where the issue had been escalating. While some sensitive areas still persist, continuous efforts by the police have led to improvements in the situation. Officials also noted that police operations are ongoing, with many security measures reinforced over the past year. Three new teams have been added to assist homeless individuals, and a collaborative group has been formed to address crack-related issues. Despite the positive outcomes of the 2024 crackdown on crack use, authorities emphasized that the current situation remains complex, requiring further efforts to address effectively.
