ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has secured a commanding lead in the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly elections, positioning itself to form the next government, according to Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sullah.
Speaking at a joint press conference in alongside Federal Minister Amir Muqam, Sanaullah announced that the party had won 13 of the 20 seats contested in the second phase of the elections. With results from 45 total seats now tabulated, PML-N has clinched victory in 26 constituencies, establishing a clear majority.
PML-N Dominates Second Phase
Sanaullah detailed that polling was completed in seven of the nine constituencies within Muzaffarabad Division during the second phase. He emphasized that the party’s performance reflects the public’s confidence in its governance agenda for the region.
The adviser rejected allegations of electoral fraud leveled by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), challenging them to provide concrete evidence. “The PPP made rigging accusations before the elections even took place,” Sanaullah stated. “When we requested proof, their claims initially referenced 13 polling stations, then dropped to four, and eventually to just two.”
Development Agenda Ahead
Sanaullah extended congratulations to successful candidates on behalf of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, PML-N President Nawaz Sharif, and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. He pledged that development projects promised during the campaign would be implemented across Azad Kashmir.
The adviser confirmed that a PML-N parliamentary party meeting would be convened immediately after the third and final phase of elections concludes on August 10 where future strategy will be determined.
Security Concerns Raised
Addressing concerns about electoral integrity, Sanaullah insisted that voters were provided full opportunity to cast their ballots freely. However, he alleged that unrest erupted at a city intersection two days before polling, allegedly coordinated with an action committee.
“Police intervention led to firing, resulting in one fatality and creating an atmosphere of fear in the city, which suppressed voter turnout,” he claimed, adding that authorities possess the names of those involved in the crossfire. He further alleged that PPP workers participated in the disturbances, causing electoral losses for PML-N.
