LAHORE – In a landmark overhaul of primary education, Punjab has announced it will introduce activity-based books for students up to Grade 5 starting from the 2027 academic session. The move signals a decisive shift away from traditional rote memorization toward a more practical, creative classroom environment.
According to officials from the Punjab Education Curriculum and Textbook Authority (PECTA), development of the new instructional materials has already commenced in alignment with the revised curriculum. The books are slated for formal rollout across the province when the 2027 academic year begins.
First-Ever Activity-Based Learning System for Punjab
PECTA representatives confirmed this is the first time Punjab has designed an activity-based learning framework specifically for students in the earliest grades. The system places significantly greater emphasis on teaching through hands-on activities rather than relying solely on conventional chalk-and-talk methods.
The core objective, officials explained, is to steer young learners away from passive memorization and instead nurture their practical skills and creative thinking. By embedding activities directly into the textbooks, the new approach aims to make learning more engaging and meaningful for children.
Bridging Classroom Content with Real Life
The redesigned books are intended to promote experiential learning among primary students. Children will be given more opportunities to understand curricular concepts and connect them to real-world situations, a departure from the abstract repetition that has long characterized early education in the region.
PECTA officials confirmed that preparation of the books according to the updated curriculum is already underway. Formal instruction using the new-style materials is expected to commence simultaneously across all districts of Punjab from the 2027 academic session.
