System Overview
The S-500 Prometheus, named after the Greek Titan, is a cutting-edge Russian air and missile defense system developed by the Almaz-Antey group. Officially entering service with the Russian Armed Forces on September 16, 2021, it represents a significant technological leap over its predecessor, the S-400 Triumph.
Capabilities and Design
The S-500 employs a “separate task processing” principle, enabling it to engage both aerodynamic targets (aircraft, drones) and ballistic threats simultaneously. It is designed to counter a wide spectrum of modern threats, including:
- Advanced aircraft and drones at any speed or altitude
- Medium-range ballistic missiles
- Hypersonic cruise missiles traveling over Mach 5
- Intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) warheads
The system is reportedly capable of detecting and engaging up to 10 hypersonic ballistic targets simultaneously, at speeds of 5–7 km/s (Mach 20) and altitudes reaching 180–200 km.
Technical Specifications and Components
The S-500 complex consists of several key mobile components mounted on specialized heavy-duty truck chassis:
- 77P6 Tractor-Erector-Launcher (TEL): Based on the BAZ-69096 10×10 truck.
- Command Posts (55K6MA & 85Zh6-2): For battle management and control.
- Radar Systems: Including the 91N6A(M) acquisition and battle management radar, the improved 96L6-TsP acquisition radar, and the 76T6 and 77T6 engagement radars.
Deployment and Current Users
Russia: The first S-500 systems were delivered in 2021 and are deployed for the air defense of Moscow. A second regiment was expected to be formed in the first half of 2022. Approximately 30 systems are believed to be deployed.
Potential International Operators
Following its development, several nations have expressed interest in the S-500:
- Turkey: After procuring the S-400 system, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has discussed potential acquisition and even co-production of the S-500.
- Algeria: Reports in 2021 indicated a major arms agreement with Russia, potentially worth $7 billion, which may include the S-500 system.
Development Timeline
The system was first announced by President Vladimir Putin in 2011. Mass production was confirmed by Almaz-Antey’s CEO in April 2022, following initial service entry in late 2021. It was originally slated for service in 2020.
