Saudi Arabia issued a stern warning on Tuesday, declaring it would not tolerate threats to its security or critical infrastructure following a series of attacks by Iran-backed militias. The Kingdom specifically condemned strikes on oil facilities in the Riyadh and Eastern regions, as well as assaults on commercial vessels navigating the Red Sea.
Cabinet Authorizes Proportional Response Under International Law
In a session chaired by Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman in Jeddah, the Saudi Cabinet affirmed the nation’s right to self-defense. Officials stated that any response to hostile acts would be carried out decisively, adhering strictly to international humanitarian law, customary international law, and the principle of proportionality.
The strong rhetoric signals a potential escalation in military posture amid rising regional tensions. The Cabinet explicitly pointed to cross-border threats originating from Yemen and Iraq, holding Tehran’s proxies responsible for the destabilizing operations.
Demand for Iraqi Sovereignty and Border Control
In a direct diplomatic message, the Cabinet urged the Iraqi government to take all necessary measures to prevent its territory from being used as a launchpad for attacks against the Kingdom. The statement underscores growing concern in Riyadh regarding the security vacuum along the northern border and the influence of armed factions operating within Iraq.
Diplomatic Engagements and Regional Stability
The Cabinet reviewed the Crown Prince’s recent high-level telephone conversations with Kuwait’s Emir Sheikh Mishal Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham. These discussions focused on Saudi Arabia’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to de-escalate regional tensions and safeguard maritime navigation in the Arabian Gulf and the Red Sea.
While reaffirming a commitment to dialogue and diplomacy, the Kingdom stressed the inviolability of state sovereignty. The Cabinet reiterated the importance of non-interference in internal affairs, good-neighbourly relations, freedom of navigation, and strict adherence to international law as cornerstones of regional stability.
