In less than a week, a woman and two men experiencing homelessness have been found dead in Paris, prompting two investigations, according to police and prosecutor’s office sources cited by AFP. The deaths occurred between Wednesday, November 26, and Monday, December 1. On Monday morning in the 9th arrondissement, a municipal agent called emergency services for a man in his fifties suffering cardiac arrest. Despite care, he died. He was homeless and carried no identification. The previous day, Sunday, in the 10th arrondissement, another homeless man in his fifties was found unconscious on a public street. Firefighters and paramedics were unable to resuscitate him, and he also could not be identified at the scene. A few days prior, on Wednesday, passersby reported the lifeless body of a woman in a tent on Boulevard Vaugirard in the 15th arrondissement. Firefighters confirmed her death. She, too, remains unidentified. These three deaths occurred as seasonal temperatures held in Paris. The circumstances highlight a broader national crisis. In late October, the advocacy group Les Morts de la Rue reported 912 homeless people died in France in 2024, a “new appalling record” since its first census in 2012. The group’s data shows 37% of these deaths were concentrated in the Île-de-France region, which includes Paris. The deceased ranged from infants only a few days old to a 93-year-old. Deaths among those under 15 doubled compared to the 2012-2023 period, now representing 4% of the total. “All indicators are in the red; there is an urgent need to mobilize,” Adèle Lenormand, a member of the collective, told AFP. The group had recorded 735 deaths for 2023.
