A 5-year-old boy has died after being severely injured in a suspected arson attack targeting a family in Meyreuis, near Marseille, France. The incident occurred last Thursday night when a fire broke out in a ground-floor apartment of a seven-story building. The blaze left four members of the family, including parents and their 5-year-old twins, with varying degrees of injuries.
The mother, aged 41, succumbed to her injuries in the hospital shortly after the incident. Her young son has now also passed away, while his twin sister remains hospitalized. Authorities have stated that the girl’s condition is “not a cause for concern.” The father, who suffered severe burns to his face and hands, has been discharged from the hospital.
Preliminary investigations have confirmed that the fire was deliberately set, according to Jean-Luc Blachon, the public prosecutor of Aix-en-Provence. He stated, “Initial findings have definitively established that the fire was of criminal origin.” The prosecutor added that the family was specifically targeted, though no motive has been disclosed. “The investigation is ongoing,” he said, describing the incident as an “extremely serious crime.”
The case has been handed over to investigative judges, who are examining charges of murder, attempted murder by an organized group, and arson by an organized group. The attack has reignited concerns in France about family-targeted violence and criminal activities. Local authorities have acknowledged the gravity of the situation and pledged to conduct a thorough investigation.
This tragic event underscores the ongoing challenges of addressing violent crimes and protecting vulnerable families in the region.
