First Lady Breaks Silence, Advocates for Peaceful Demonstrations
In a rare public intervention, First Lady Melania Trump has called for “peace” and “unity” in Minneapolis, where tensions remain high following the deaths of two protesters, Alex Pretti and Renee Good. The individuals were killed in recent days by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents during demonstrations against the agency’s operations.
Speaking from the Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida, Mrs. Trump addressed the situation in an interview with Fox News. “I know that my husband, the president, had an excellent phone conversation yesterday with the governor and the mayor, and they are working together to keep the situation peaceful and without riots,” she stated. The First Lady advocated for “peaceful protests,” adding, “I am against violence. We must unite in these difficult times.”
A Contrast in Tone from the White House
Melania Trump extended her “deep compassion” to those affected by the turmoil in Minneapolis. Her conciliatory remarks stand in contrast to those of President Donald Trump, who has attributed the deaths of Pretti and Good to “the chaos caused by the Democrats.”
Concurrently, the President has dispatched his border czar, Tom Homan, to Minneapolis. Homan, the architect of the administration’s mass deportation policy, will report directly to President Trump, effectively replacing Greg Bovino on the ground. Bovino had become a prominent figure in U.S. immigration enforcement, famously reframing the “Star Wars” concept as a “border war.”
Federal Agents Begin Withdrawal as City Seeks Calm
In a potential de-escalation move, Democratic Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey announced that federal agents would begin withdrawing from the city starting Tuesday. This follows the mayor’s discussions with the President. The move is widely interpreted as an attempt to calm a city deeply wounded by the twin tragedies.
The situation continues to draw significant national attention, highlighting the deep political divisions surrounding immigration policy and law enforcement in the United States.
