Security forces engaged and killed eight militants allegedly sponsored by India during an operation along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border in North Waziristan, the military’s media wing announced on Thursday.
Operation Details and Recovery
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the movement of a group of India-backed militants, referred to as “Fitna al-Khawarij,” was detected by security forces on April 1. The forces effectively engaged the group, resulting in the elimination of eight terrorists through what the ISPR described as “precise and skillful engagement.” Weapons and ammunition were recovered from the slain militants.
Accusations Against Afghan Taliban Regime
The military statement strongly criticized the Afghan Taliban administration, linking the incident to failed border management. “The engagement once again substantiates our repeated stance regarding the abject failure of the Afghan Taliban regime to ensure effective border management on their side of the border,” the ISPR stated. It demanded that the Afghan Taliban “fulfil its obligations and deny the use of Afghan soil” by militants involved in terrorism inside Pakistan.
Ongoing Sanitization and Broader Campaign
Sanitization operations are underway to clear any remaining militants from the area. The ISPR affirmed that Pakistan’s security forces remain resolute in defending the nation’s frontiers. The operation is part of the relentless “Azm-e-Istehkam” counter-terrorism campaign aimed at eradicating foreign-sponsored terrorism from the country.
Context of Rising Cross-Border Tensions
Pakistan has experienced a significant surge in cross-border militant activity since the Afghan Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in 2021, particularly in the bordering provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. In response to escalating attacks, Pakistan previously launched “Operation Ghazab lil-Haq,” which, according to Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, resulted in approximately 684 Afghan Taliban fighters and allied militants killed and over 900 wounded.
Tensions have periodically flared, including border clashes in October 2025 after what Pakistan described as unprovoked assaults by Afghan Taliban fighters and allied militants on its border positions. Those clashes resulted in over 200 militant fatalities and the martyrdom of 23 Pakistani soldiers. Despite negotiations, a lasting breakthrough has been elusive, with Pakistan citing the Afghan Taliban’s unwillingness to act against militant groups on its soil.
