US Rescues Downed Airman in Daring Iran Raid, Trump Confirms

US Rescues Downed Airman in Daring Iran Raid, Trump Confirms

WASHINGTON — U.S. special operations forces have successfully rescued an airman who ejected from an F-15E Strike Eagle shot down over Iran, President Donald Trump confirmed Sunday, ending a high-stakes search that risked triggering a hostage crisis.

A High-Risk Operation in Hostile Territory

The rescued colonel, who served as the weapons-systems officer on the downed fighter jet, was extracted from what Trump described as “the treacherous mountains of Iran.” The operation marks a significant moment in the six-week-old conflict, which the U.S. and Israel initiated on February 28.

“Over the past several hours, the United States Military pulled off one of the most daring Search and Rescue Operations in US History,” Trump said in a statement, noting the airman was injured but “will be just fine.”

Fierce Resistance and Aircraft Losses

The complex rescue mission faced heavy Iranian resistance. According to U.S. officials and reports:

  • Two U.S. Black Hawk helicopters involved in the initial search were hit by Iranian fire but managed to escape Iranian airspace.
  • An A-10 Warthog aircraft was shot down over Kuwait, with the pilot ejecting. The extent of crew injuries is unclear.
  • During the extraction, U.S. forces were forced to destroy at least one transport aircraft that malfunctioned inside Iran.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed several U.S. aircraft were destroyed during the rescue attempt, as reported by the Tasnim news agency.

Strategic Implications and Escalating Conflict

The successful rescue averts a potential propaganda and diplomatic victory for Iran, which had urged its citizens to find the downed airman to gain leverage. Had the officer been captured, it could have shifted American public opinion on a war that polls show is already unpopular.

Trump has threatened to escalate the conflict further with attacks on Iran’s energy infrastructure. The war has already had significant global repercussions:

  • It has killed 13 U.S. service members and wounded over 300, according to U.S. Central Command.
  • The conflict has driven up global energy prices, fueling market volatility and inflation fears.
  • Despite U.S. claims of air dominance, Iranian forces continue to pose a threat, retaining significant missile and drone capabilities, according to intelligence reports.

A Rare Dual Rescue

This operation concludes the search for the two-person crew of the F-15E. The first crew member was retrieved on Friday. Trump highlighted the uniqueness of the mission, calling it the first time in military memory that two U.S. pilots have been rescued separately from deep within enemy territory.

The conflict, which has spread across the Middle East, continues with no clear end in sight, as both sides assess their next moves following this dramatic rescue.
