WASHINGTON — U.S. special operations forces have successfully rescued an airman who ejected from an F-15E Strike Eagle shot down over Iran, President Donald Trump confirmed Sunday, ending a high-stakes search that risked triggering a hostage crisis.
A High-Risk Operation in Hostile Territory
The rescued colonel, who served as the weapons-systems officer on the downed fighter jet, was extracted from what Trump described as “the treacherous mountains of Iran.” The operation marks a significant moment in the six-week-old conflict, which the U.S. and Israel initiated on February 28.
“Over the past several hours, the United States Military pulled off one of the most daring Search and Rescue Operations in US History,” Trump said in a statement, noting the airman was injured but “will be just fine.”
Fierce Resistance and Aircraft Losses
The complex rescue mission faced heavy Iranian resistance. According to U.S. officials and reports:
- Two U.S. Black Hawk helicopters involved in the initial search were hit by Iranian fire but managed to escape Iranian airspace.
- An A-10 Warthog aircraft was shot down over Kuwait, with the pilot ejecting. The extent of crew injuries is unclear.
- During the extraction, U.S. forces were forced to destroy at least one transport aircraft that malfunctioned inside Iran.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed several U.S. aircraft were destroyed during the rescue attempt, as reported by the Tasnim news agency.
