Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has issued directives for the comprehensive digitisation of the National Tariff Commission (NTC), marking a significant push to modernise the country’s trade regulatory framework and attract foreign investment.
Drive for Transparency and Efficiency
Chairing a high-level review meeting on NTC reforms, the Premier emphasized that restructuring the commission is critical for industrial growth. He ordered the resolution of the body’s legal and administrative issues through a consolidated strategy aimed at promoting trade and investment.
The prime minister instructed officials to implement special measures that would shield investors and industrialists from legal complexities. He stressed the necessity of studying international best practices to align the NTC’s operations with global standards.
Leveraging Technology and Expertise
A key component of the reform plan involves integrating advanced technologies into the NTC’s functions. Prime Minister Shehbaz called for the adoption of information technology, artificial intelligence, and other modern tools to foster innovation.
Further directives included:
- Simplifying legal procedures within the NTC’s appellate tribunal.
- Training commission staff according to international benchmarks.
- Engaging professional experts to provide practical guidance on the reform process.
Timely Case Disposal and Implementation
Warning against delays, the Prime Minister directed the establishment of a system to ensure all are disposed of within a strict, specified timeframe. During the meeting, the NTC chairman briefed attendees on the legal, administrative, and financial reforms already underway as part of an approved roadmap.
The meeting was attended by several federal ministers and senior government officials, underscoring the initiative’s priority within the government’s economic agenda.
