US Energy Chief Warns Gas Prices May Stay Above $3 Until 2027

US Energy Chief Warns Gas Prices May Stay Above $3 Until 2027

US Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated on Sunday that gasoline prices have likely peaked but warned American consumers that costs at the pump could stay above $3 per gallon until next year. The ongoing conflict with Iran continues to exert significant pressure on global energy markets.

Political and Economic Pressure Mounts

The surge in gas prices, stemming from the US and Israeli military engagement with Iran and subsequent Iranian attacks on US bases in the Gulf, has created substantial political challenges for President Donald Trump. With the November midterm elections approaching, where Republicans are defending narrow majorities in Congress, the economic issue has become a focal point for voters.

Administration Presents Mixed Timeline

While Wright expressed optimism that prices have reached their highest point, he offered a cautious timeline for relief. “Gas below $3 a gallon could happen later this year, that might not happen until next year,” Wright said during an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union.” He directly linked the pricing to geopolitical events, adding, “Certainly, with the resolution of this conflict, you’ll see prices go down.”

This outlook contrasts with other administration voices. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent predicted last week that prices would fall to the $3 range this summer. President Trump himself has suggested prices may remain high until November.

Current Market Snapshot and Ceasefire Tensions

According to AAA, the national average for a gallon of regular gasoline stood at $4.05 on Sunday, a sharp increase from $3.16 a year ago. Despite a 10-day ceasefire agreement reached on April 8, tensions flared anew over the weekend. President Trump accused Iran of violating the truce with attacks on ships in the critical Strait of Hormuz.

In a social media post, Trump announced that US officials were en route to Pakistan for further negotiations on Monday, coupled with a stark warning to Iran. “We’re offering a very fair and reasonable deal… if they don’t, the United States is going to knock out every single Power Plant, and every single Bridge, in Iran,” he wrote.

Long-Term Outlook

Despite the immediate pressures, Secretary Wright maintained a long-term perspective on fuel affordability. “Under $3 a gallon is pretty tremendous in inflation-adjusted terms,” he noted. “We’ll get back there for sure.” The administration’s unified message is that a lasting resolution to the Iran conflict is the primary key to unlocking lower gas prices for American drivers.
