Security forces have eliminated two high-profile terrorists, including a ring leader, during an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bannu district, the military’s media wing announced on Monday.
Operation Details and Fatal Exchange
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the operation was conducted on April 19 based on intelligence regarding terrorist presence in the area. An intense firefight ensued, resulting in the deaths of two individuals described as “khwarij” belonging to an “Indian sponsored” group.
The killed individuals were identified as ring leader Waheedullah, also known as Muktiar, and an accompanying suicide bomber. Security forces recovered a suicide jacket, weapons, and ammunition from the scene.
Wanted Leader Brought to Justice
The ISPR stated that Waheedullah was among the most wanted terrorists in the region, actively involved in numerous attacks that led to the deaths of security personnel and civilians. He was specifically named as the main handler for a suicide bomber responsible for an attack in Bannu on February 21, 2026, which resulted in the martyrdom of Lieutenant Colonel Gul Faraz.
“The operation has indeed avenged the heinous act and has brought the main perpetrator to justice,” the ISPR statement read, adding that the timely action averted a major catastrophe.
Ongoing Counter-Terrorism Campaign
Sanitization operations are ongoing in the area to eliminate any other terrorists. The military reaffirmed its commitment to the counter-terrorism campaign under the vision “Azm e Istehkam,” vowing to continue efforts to eradicate foreign-sponsored terrorism from Pakistan.
Regional Security Context
The operation occurs against a backdrop of increased cross-border militant activity since the Afghan Taliban’s return to power in 2021. Pakistan has witnessed a sharp rise in incidents, particularly in provinces bordering Afghanistan.
In response, Pakistan launched “Operation Ghazab lil-Haq,” which has reportedly resulted in significant militant casualties. Despite diplomatic engagements, tensions persist due to the Afghan Taliban regime’s alleged reluctance to act against terrorist outfits operating from its soil.
