Every two years, Disney’s massive D23 convention treats fans to a glimpse of upcoming cinematic releases. This year, attendees were not left wanting, as one major announcement stole the show: Zootopia will get a third installment.
The franchise, which began with the 2016 original, follows the adventures of police rabbit Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) and con-artist fox Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman). Its sequel, released nine years later, currently stands as the most lucrative success in Disney’s history—excluding Marvel and Lucasfilm, both Disney-owned studios—with nearly $1.9 billion in global box office revenue. The first Zootopia had already grossed $1 billion worldwide.
A spin-off series titled Zootopia+ also streamed on Disney+ starting in 2022, offering a six-episode anthology focused on popular secondary characters from the franchise’s universe.
The Snake Returns
In Zootopia 2, audiences dove back into the vibrant city of Zootopia, a modern metropolis where predators and prey coexist peacefully, yet stereotypes continue to weigh on social interactions. Fans happily reunited with the duo of Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, the latter now joining the police force as the rabbit’s partner. Their chief, the imposing buffalo Bogo, assigns them a crucial mission: investigate the appearance of a mysterious snake in the city, Gary De’Snake. Viewers are quickly swept into the investigation, but Judy and Nick’s cover soon falls apart, plunging them into a thrilling adventure that threatens Zootopia’s balance.
For Zootopia 3, the two lead voice actors confirmed on stage Friday during the convention that “the rabbit and the snake will be back,” according to Variety. Fans may now face a long wait, however, as no release date has been announced.
