Russian strikes hit the North Bridge in Kyiv on Saturday, damaging the road surface and trolleybus cables, just days after an attack on the South Bridge, according to the Ukrainian capital’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko.
“The North Bridge has been hit. Emergency services are on their way,” Klitschko wrote on Telegram. According to the mayor, the road surface and trolleybus cables on the bridge were damaged, and traffic was halted in the left bank-to-right bank direction across the Dnipro River.
South Bridge Hit by Russian Drones Earlier in the Week
On Thursday and Friday, the South Bridge was struck by Russian drones, forcing its closure to traffic and causing massive traffic jams in the metropolis, which is split in two by the Dnipro. Since the start of Russia’s invasion in 2022, Kyiv has feared attacks on its eight main road and railway bridges — infrastructure deemed essential to the capital’s logistics.
Traffic on two other major bridges, the Paton and Metro bridges, was also restricted by city authorities on Friday, even though no attacks had been reported against those structures. AFP journalists also observed temporary restrictions on the Darnytsky Bridge during the morning.
Moscow Presses Campaign Against Ukrainian Infrastructure
The strikes are part of a sustained Russian campaign against Ukrainian infrastructure. Moscow has continued bombarding the country relentlessly, with the capital’s critical river crossings emerging as a focal point of concern for both military planners and civilians alike.
The repeated targeting of Kyiv’s bridges has raised alarm over the potential disruption of transport links and emergency access across the Dnipro, a key geographic and logistical divide in the city. Authorities have yet to report casualties from Saturday’s strike, and emergency crews remain at the scene.
