Spain has once again been struck by severe flooding, with torrential rains battering Barcelona and its surrounding areas overnight. At least two people have died, and residents remain on high alert as authorities warn of further dangers.
Cars Swept Away as Waters Rise
The sheer force of the floodwaters was captured on video, with cars being carried away by the current. In one incident, a driver hesitated before attempting to cross a flooded road, only to abandon his vehicle and scramble to safety as the crossing proved impossible.
Water infiltrated the tunnels of a train station, forcing the suspension of metro and rail services across the affected region.
Two Confirmed Fatalities
According to regional authorities, two people have lost their lives:
- A person drowned in their flooded garage in Montornès del Vallès.
- A 65-year-old man died when a wall collapsed at a campsite in Tordera.
Residents Caught Off Guard
In the streets, drainage systems overflowed and numerous parking areas became inaccessible. Many residents reported having to abandon their vehicles at the last moment as water levels rose rapidly.
“Everything here was flooded, the water was even higher than the car hoods,” one local resident said.
As of Sunday morning, Spanish media and authorities remained on alert, warning of additional risks of river overflow. “On an ordinary Sunday, you would see the lawn and people running on the sidewalks, but now everything is flooded, everything is underwater,” a journalist reported from the scene.
The region hopes for a return to normal conditions by the end of the weekend.
