Mirage 2000D Fighter Jet Crashes Near Nancy: One Crew Member Found Dead, Second Still Missing

Mirage 2000D Fighter Jet Crashes Near Nancy: One Crew Member Found Dead, Second Still Missing

A French Air and Space Force Mirage 2000D fighter jet crashed on Tuesday evening near the commune of Rogéville in Meurthe-et-Moselle, north of Nancy, prompting an extensive search and rescue operation. The body of one of the two crew members on board has been recovered, while searches continue for the second occupant.

Loss of Contact During Training Mission

According to the Air and Space Force, the aircraft was returning from a routine training mission at approximately 10:00 p.m. and was approaching Nancy-Ochey air base when radio and radar contact was lost with the control tower. The plane crashed shortly afterwards.

The Mirage 2000D is a two-seat aircraft carrying a pilot in the front cockpit and a weapons systems officer in the rear. Colonel David Pappalardo, spokesperson for the Air and Space Force, stated that “it appears at least one of the crew members was unable to eject.”

The aircraft, an unarmed two-seater, “was conducting a standard training mission,” Pappalardo confirmed. “It was in radio and radar contact with the approach control at Nancy air base. Suddenly, they noticed it was no longer responding to radio calls and lost radar contact.”

Difficult Search Conditions

Search operations were launched immediately, but were hampered by challenging weather conditions. Yves Séguy, prefect of Meurthe-et-Moselle, described “difficult meteorological conditions” including darkness and fog that made helicopter deployment impossible during the night.

Ground search teams from the air base, local fire services, and gendarmerie combed the area between Nancy and Pont-à-Mousson. The first debris from the aircraft was discovered in the early morning around 4:00 a.m. near Rogéville, Tremblecourt, and Domèvre-en-Haye, approximately 15 kilometers from Pont-à-Mousson.

According to Pascal Doyotte, mayor of Rogéville, several witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion and seeing a fireball in the sky around 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Crew Profiles

The two military personnel on board have been identified by their roles. Colonel Ludovic Humbert, commander of Nancy-Ochey air base 133, described one as “a young pilot in training” who nonetheless possessed “all the prerequisites and qualifications necessary to fly” the aircraft. The other was “a particularly experienced weapons systems officer with numerous flight hours” and “a very seasoned navigator.”

The body recovered has not yet been formally identified.

Investigation Underway

Safety investigations are in progress to determine the circumstances of the accident. “It is far too early to draw conclusions about what caused this accident,” Colonel Pappalardo emphasized, adding that he was unable to indicate what triggered the crash.

The military has classified the incident as an “exceptional accident” and described the situation as “complex but under control.” The Air and Space Force stated that its “priority” is with the families of the two crew members.
