A French Air and Space Force Mirage 2000D fighter jet crashed late Tuesday near the northeastern city of Nancy during a nighttime training flight, killing at least one crew member, military officials confirmed.
The aircraft, assigned to Air Base 133 in Nancy-Ochey, went down near the village of Rogéville at approximately 10:40 p.m. local time, according to the Air and Space Force. Search operations were continuing for the second crew member.
Difficult Conditions Hamper Search
Local prefect Yves Séguy told a press conference that authorities launched “all possible rescue operations” under “difficult meteorological conditions.”
“We could not request or obtain helicopter overflight of the zone: night, fog, extremely bad weather,” Séguy said, explaining that search teams were operating on foot, supported by drones.
Henry Lemoine, president of the Pont-à-Mousson community of communes, said on Facebook that debris had been spotted by a drone in the area between the communes of Rogéville, Domevre and Tremblecourt. He added that significant gendarmerie and fire service resources had been mobilized.
Crew Included Instructor and Experienced Officer
Colonel David Pappalardo, spokesman for the Air and Space Force, told Franceinfo that the aircraft carried a “young pilot in training” and a weapons systems officer who was “particularly experienced with numerous flight hours.”
Colonel Ludovic Humbert, commander of Air Base 133, said the Mirage 2000D had been “recently renovated” and had “no reliability issues,” describing it as “updated.”
A Troubled Safety Record
The Mirage 2000D is a two-seat ground-attack combat aircraft that entered service in 1993. It has been deployed in most conflicts involving France since then, including Kosovo in 1999, Libya in 2011, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and the Sahel.
The model has experienced several accidents over its career. In January 2019, a Mirage 2000D crashed in the Jura region during a low-altitude night flight, killing both the pilot and navigator. In July 2021, another crash occurred in the Nancy region, though the crew managed to eject.
In August 2024, two Rafale fighter jets collided during a training flight over Lorraine, killing two members of one crew. In March 2025, two Alphajet aircraft from the Patrouille de France demonstration team collided near the Saint-Dizier air base in Haute-Marne, with both crews successfully ejecting.
To remain in service until the 2030s, the Mirage 2000D underwent a mid-life renovation program, with the 50th and final upgraded aircraft delivered to the Air and Space Force in June.
