The Punjab government has replaced its Director General of Food and Cane Commissioner, Amjad Hafeez, appointing Captain (retd) Muhammad Waseem to both positions with immediate effect.
According to a notification issued by the Services and General Administration Department, the transfers were ordered by Chief Secretary Zahid Akhtar Zaman. Hafeez has been directed to report immediately to the Services and General Administration Department.
Price Enforcement Record Precedes Appointment
Waseem arrives at the food portfolio with a track record in commodity price enforcement and agricultural market negotiations. As Deputy Commissioner Sargodha, he notified district sugar prices in July 2025 and instructed price control magistrates to enforce the official rates, requiring retailers to display price lists and warning of action against violations.
In January 2026, his district administration helped broker an agreement between kinnow growers and factory owners, fixing a rate of Rs1,600 per maund for that week. Farmer representatives credited Waseem with helping resolve the dispute.
Career Spanning District Governance
Waseem’s administrative career includes a posting as Deputy Commissioner Bahawalnagar from October 2021 to February 2023. He took charge as Deputy Commissioner Sargodha in August 2024 and was given additional responsibility for Khushab district in December that year.
He subsequently moved to the Wildlife and Parks organisation in late January 2026, replacing Mubeen Elahi. He now assumes Punjab’s food and cane portfolio following assignments spanning district governance, commodity price enforcement and departmental administration.
