Burkina Faso Swaps Crowns for Equations in Push to Empower Women Scientists

Burkina Faso Swaps Crowns for Equations in Push to Empower Women Scientists

Burkina Faso has suspended all beauty pageants and replaced them with a national science competition for young women, in a move that signals a dramatic shift in how the West African nation celebrates its female citizens.

The Ministry of Culture halted all beauty contests while it reviews the regulatory framework governing them. The decision reflects a desire to break free from foreign beauty standards — tall, thin, light-skinned, straight-haired and French-speaking — and instead celebrate the Burkinabè woman with her natural curves, kinky hair, local dialects and, above all, her intellectual abilities.

From Runway to Laboratory

President Captain Ibrahim Traoré personally championed the new direction by launching a science competition for young women this autumn. Top performers in mathematics, chemistry and physics took the place of beauty queens. Fifteen laureates were rewarded out of 84 candidates — all female baccalaureate graduates selected on academic merit.

After a week-long immersion at the national science high school, the candidates sat examinations across various disciplines. The winners were received by the president, underscoring the dual purpose of the initiative: steering girls toward scientific fields and fostering patriotism.

Strategic Goals Beyond Statistics

“Beyond the statistics showing that many young girls gravitate toward literary fields, we have strategic objectives,” the Burkinabè leader said. He wants to develop the country through technology and is urging teachers to “change the mindset of the youth.”

This female talent pool is intended to drive the country’s industrial transformation and accelerate its technological autonomy. Since the military junta came to power four years ago, the regime’s policy has pursued a single goal: reclaiming sovereignty across all sectors. The science competition is one more step in that direction — though critics note it also risks extending control over minds and bodies.

A Double-Edged Initiative

While the intention behind the contest is commendable, observers warn it is a double-edged sword. The regime’s push for sovereignty has raised concerns about tightening control over civil life. Nevertheless, in Burkina Faso today, women scientists are more honored than beauty queens — and the competition will open to boys in 2027.

  • Beauty pageants suspended pending a review of regulations
  • 15 laureates selected from 84 female baccalaureate candidates
  • Competition focuses on mathematics, chemistry and physics
  • Contest to be opened to male students in 2027
