A senior Pakistani strategic adviser has warned that India’s military expansion and nuclear posture are pushing South Asia toward instability, calling for political dialogue to resolve long-standing disputes, including Kashmir.
Lieutenant General (retd) Mazhar Jamil, an adviser to Pakistan’s National Command Authority, made the remarks at a seminar in London organised under the auspices of the International Institute for Strategic Studies, according to Dunya News.
Expansionist Ambitions and Regional Dominance
Jamil identified what he described as India’s expansionist ambitions and pursuit of regional dominance as major sources of instability in South Asia. He also criticised Hindutva-based politics in India, saying it contributed to unrest across the region.
He warned that India’s military posture and the rapid expansion of its nuclear capabilities posed risks to strategic stability, and questioned the credibility of India’s stated no-first-use nuclear policy while expressing concern over its missile programme and dual-capable weapons.
May 2025 Crisis and the Brink of Escalation
Referring to the crisis of May 2025, Jamil said Indian aggression had brought South Asia close to the brink of nuclear devastation. He maintained that Pakistan had responded effectively and subsequently exercised restraint to prevent further escalation.
He reiterated that Pakistan’s policy was clear: any act of aggression would carry a heavy cost. He described Pakistan’s nuclear and full-spectrum deterrence capabilities as key pillars in maintaining the region’s strategic balance.
Kashmir and the Call for Dialogue
On the Kashmir dispute, Jamil accused India of avoiding a resolution while attempting to suppress the conflict through military power and aggression. He stressed that the issue should be settled in accordance with United Nations Security Council resolutions.
Concluding his remarks, he called for political dialogue as a necessary path toward lasting peace in South Asia, emphasising the need to address regional disputes and prevent further escalation.
