Paris—French President Emmanuel Macron has cautioned against any peace agreement in Ukraine that would be tantamount to a defeat for the nation, emphasizing that such a resolution would be detrimental for all involved. Macron highlighted the necessity for Russian President Vladimir Putin to commit to a genuine and lasting ceasefire.
In his remarks, Macron commented on former U.S. President Donald Trump’s efforts to engage in direct talks with the Russian leader. He stated, “A peace that equates to Ukraine’s loss is bad news for everyone.” Macron stressed the importance of assessing Putin’s willingness to engage in sustainable ceasefire negotiations.
Macron further asserted that Ukraine alone has the authority to negotiate the terms of its sovereignty and territorial integrity with Russia. He added that European countries should also participate in discussions concerning future security. According to Macron, the international community has a collective responsibility to ensure European security guarantees.
The French president also mentioned the potential deployment of forces to Ukraine to ensure the country’s security in the event of a ceasefire. U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth stated that Europe must seek robust security assurances, while clarifying that there are no plans for the deployment of American troops in Ukraine.
