Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced plans to elevate Pakistan-Bahrain bilateral trade from its current $550 million to $1 billion within the next three years. The ambitious target was revealed during high-level meetings in Manama, where the Pakistani leader met with Bahrain’s Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
Strengthening Economic Ties
The trade expansion initiative will be supported by the Pakistan-GCC Free Trade Agreement, which is reportedly in advanced stages of finalization. Recent visa requirement relaxations between the two nations are also expected to facilitate increased economic cooperation.

Enhanced Connectivity and Infrastructure
The Prime Minister proposed strengthening port-to-port connectivity between Pakistan’s Karachi and Gwadar ports and Bahrain’s Khalifa Bin Salman Port. This initiative aims to create more efficient trade routes and boost maritime cooperation between the two nations.
Diplomatic and Security Cooperation
During the meetings, PM Shehbaz congratulated Bahrain on securing a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2026-2027 term and expressed Pakistan’s readiness for close coordination during Bahrain’s tenure.
Defense and security cooperation featured prominently in discussions, with both sides agreeing to expand collaboration in:
- Military training programs
- Cybersecurity initiatives
- Defense production
- Information sharing mechanisms
Humanitarian and Community Relations
The Pakistani leadership acknowledged Bahrain’s support for the approximately 150,000-strong Pakistani community residing in the kingdom. Pakistan reaffirmed its commitment to providing additional skilled manpower and welcomed further collaboration in higher education, technical training, and digital governance.
Regional Concerns Addressed
Both leaders discussed the recent developments in Gaza, agreeing that establishing peace and stability is long overdue for the Palestinian people who have suffered for decades.
Royal Recognition
In a separate meeting, Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa conferred upon Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif the Order of Bahrain (First Class), the highest award given by Bahrain to heads of states and governments. The king highlighted the historical connection between the two nations, noting that Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah had served as Bahrain’s legal representative for an extended period.
Official Delegation and Protocol
The Prime Minister’s two-day official visit to Bahrain included a ceremonial guard of honor at the Al-Qudaibiya Palace in Manama. He was accompanied by a high-level delegation including senior cabinet ministers and government officials, signaling the importance both nations place on strengthening bilateral relations.
The discussions concluded with confidence that the agreements reached would translate into tangible outcomes, further elevating Pakistan-Bahrain relations across strategic, economic, security, and people-to-people domains.
