Legal Process Underway for Former Leader Facing Death Sentence
India confirmed on Wednesday that it is examining a formal request from Bangladesh for the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who faces a death sentence in her home country for crimes against humanity.
The Indian foreign ministry spokesperson stated the request is being reviewed as part of ongoing internal judicial and legal processes. Bangladesh initially made the extradition request in December and reiterated it this month following Hasina’s conviction.
Death Sentence and International Ramifications
A Bangladesh court sentenced the 78-year-old former leader to death on Monday for her role in the killing of student protesters during mass demonstrations last year. The United Nations estimates up to 1,400 people died in crackdowns as Hasina attempted to maintain power.
Bangladesh’s foreign ministry has asserted that India has an “obligatory responsibility” under a bilateral treaty to facilitate the former prime minister’s return to face justice.
Political Turmoil and Regional Relations
Hasina fled to India in August 2024 when her autocratic government was overthrown amid widespread protests. Her presence in India has strained relations between the neighboring countries, particularly given New Delhi’s previous support for her administration.
Bangladesh remains in political turmoil ahead of elections expected in February 2026, with violence reported during campaign activities.
Diplomatic Engagement Continues
Despite tensions, diplomatic channels remain open. Bangladesh’s National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman visited India this week for a regional security summit and met with his Indian counterpart Ajit Doval.
Media reports indicate Rahman extended an invitation for Doval to visit Bangladesh, suggesting ongoing efforts to maintain dialogue between the two nations despite the extradition dispute.
