Police used an electric pulse weapon to subdue a man who seized an officer’s assault rifle and fired a shot during a check on Tuesday morning near the Pyramides metro station in central Paris.
Bloodied Hammer and a Struggle
Officers from the Brigade des réseaux franciliens (BRF) intervened on Rue des Petits Champs in the 2nd arrondissement to check on a man carrying a hammer stained with blood, according to police sources. The young man resisted arrest and attempted to grab an officer’s assault rifle, discharging a single shot. The Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed no one was injured in the incident.
Psychiatric Monitoring and Investigation
The individual was taken to Cochin Hospital to assess his health and determine if his psychiatric state was compatible with police custody. Authorities confirmed the man was on medication as part of ongoing psychiatric care.
Identified as Jamal B., born in 2000 in Val-de-Marne, the man told police he had cut his hand on glass. He admitted to discarding a bloodied hammer in a bin outside the Institut des Langues near the Pyramides metro exit. He stated that being “agitated” during the check led to his refusal to comply with officers.
The regional transport security unit has opened an investigation into charges of rebellion, damage, and violence against a police officer.
