Early Morning Confrontation at Florida Resort
The US Secret Service announced that its agents shot and killed an armed man who unlawfully entered the secure perimeter of former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, early Sunday morning. The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. local time (0630 GMT). President Trump was in Washington, D.C., at the time and was not present at the resort.
Suspect Armed with Shotgun and Fuel Can
According to an agency statement, the suspect, a man in his early 20s, was first observed near the north gate of the property. He was reportedly carrying what appeared to be a shotgun and a fuel can. Secret Service agents confronted the individual, leading to an exchange of gunfire. No law enforcement officers were injured in the confrontation.
“An armed man was shot and killed by US Secret Service agents after unlawfully entering the secure perimeter at Mar-a-Lago early this morning,” agency spokesman Anthony Guglielmi stated in a social media post. The identity of the suspect has not been released as officials work to notify his family.
History of Threats Against Trump
This event marks the latest security incident involving the former president, who has been the target of several assassination plots. Earlier this month, Ryan Routh, 59, was sentenced to life in prison for plotting to assassinate Trump at a Florida golf course in September 2024.
That planned attack followed a major assassination attempt in July 2024 in Pennsylvania, where 20-year-old Matthew Crooks fired shots at a campaign rally, grazing Trump’s ear and killing a rally attendee. Crooks was immediately killed by security forces.
Context of Political Violence
The shooting at Mar-a-Lago is the latest episode of political violence in a deeply polarized United States. The Secret Service investigation into the suspect’s motives is ongoing. The agency has confirmed that the security protocols at the estate functioned as designed to neutralize the threat.
