Islamabad International Airport has achieved a significant milestone by becoming Pakistan’s first fully cashless airport. This transformative move is set to enhance passenger convenience and streamline operations through comprehensive digital payment integration.
Digital Payment Ecosystem Takes Flight
Under the new system, all financial transactions within the airport will be conducted electronically. This includes payments for:
- Airline ticketing and related services
- Car parking facilities
- Food courts and restaurants
- Retail and duty-free shopping outlets
Passengers can utilize various digital methods such as mobile wallets, QR code scanning, mobile banking applications, and traditional debit or credit cards to complete their transactions seamlessly.
Driving Transparency and Efficiency
Airport authorities have emphasized that this initiative aims to improve operational transparency, increase efficiency, and provide greater ease for travelers. The shift to a cashless model is expected to reduce transaction times and minimize physical contact points, aligning with modern travel expectations.
The development follows the federal government’s recent announcement to include Islamabad International Airport in its active privatization program. This move is part of a broader strategy that also involves the privatization of Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport and Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport.
Enhanced Passenger Services
In addition to the cashless system, airport management has launched a modern mobile application designed to assist passengers with baggage tracking. This feature allows travelers to monitor lost luggage from any location worldwide, significantly improving the customer service experience.
Chief Operating Officer and Airport Manager Aftab Gilani stated that these digital advancements will not only boost passenger convenience but also elevate the airport’s overall rating and international standing. Senior Joint Director Commercial Malik Amjad described the initiative as a crucial step in modernizing airport services across Pakistan.
As the nation’s aviation sector embraces digital transformation, Islamabad International Airport’s cashless model sets a new benchmark for other airports in the region to follow.
