Investigation Opened for Threats and Incitement to Hatred
French prosecutors have opened an investigation after a pig’s head and an insulting, antisemitic poster were left outside the home of Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi. The incident, confirmed by the public prosecutor’s office on Saturday, February 28, is being treated as a serious threat against a public official.
Nature of the Attack
The investigation, led by Prosecutor Damien Martinelli, is examining charges of “threats and insult against a person holding public authority” and “incitement to hatred and violence on grounds of religion.” Mayor Estrosi, who is a candidate for re-election in the municipal elections on March 15 and 22, shared an image of the scene on social media platform X.
The photo shows the pig’s head alongside a poster labeled “Asshole!” featuring the mayor’s face with a Star of David superimposed on his forehead. Estrosi condemned the act, stating, “Everything I have always fought against in my city is now striking at my door. Abject.”
Political Solidarity and Context
The mayor received immediate expressions of solidarity, including from his main electoral rival, MP Eric Ciotti. Ciotti issued a statement offering his “full and entire support” to Estrosi and his family, denouncing the act as “a serious attack on human dignity and a direct assault on the fundamental values of the Republic.”
This incident occurs in a charged political climate. Mayor Estrosi has been a vocal supporter of Israel, notably hanging Israeli flags on Nice’s city hall following the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks. He was required to remove the flags in June after a ruling by the administrative court but has continued to publicly defend the Israeli government.

The investigation is now underway to identify those responsible for the act, which combines personal intimidation with blatant antisemitic symbolism. The case highlights ongoing tensions and the severe nature of hate-based intimidation in French political life.
