The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has awarded the national men’s cricket team a staggering bonus of INR 1.31 billion (approximately $14.24 million) for their historic T20 World Cup 2026 victory, a sum that dwarfs the official tournament prize money.
A Reward Far Beyond the Trophy
India secured their third men’s T20 World Cup title with a commanding 96-run win over New Zealand in the final on Sunday, March 8. For that tournament victory, the team earned a prize of $2.34 million from the International Cricket Council (ICC).
However, the BCCI, recognized as the world’s wealthiest cricket board, announced an additional bonus on Tuesday that is roughly six times that amount. Notably, this $14.24 million bonus is itself about $3 million higher than the ICC’s total prize pool of $11.25 million for the entire T20 World Cup tournament.
Continuing a Tradition of Generosity
This move follows a pattern of lavish rewards from the Indian board. Last year, the BCCI gave the Champions Trophy-winning Indian team a $6.72 million cash bonus, which was triple the $2.24 million they received for winning that title.
In a statement, the BCCI said, “The Board congratulates the players, support staff and selectors once again on this historic achievement and wishes them continued success in the future.”
Eyes on the Olympic Prize
Fresh from this monumental win and reward, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav has already set the team’s next major objective: winning a gold medal when cricket makes its return at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.
The substantial financial reward underscores the immense commercial power and passion for cricket in India, celebrating a victory that has captivated the nation.
