In a notable political reaction, former US President Donald Trump expressed disappointment at the reported ascent of Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran’s next supreme leader. Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly urged Trump in a phone call to end the war quickly.
Global Economic and Security Repercussions
The conflict is sending shockwaves through global markets and security alliances. Amin Nasser, CEO of Saudi Aramco, warned of “catastrophic consequences” for world oil markets if shipping cannot resume in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, citing already critically low global inventories.
NATO has moved to bolster regional defenses, with Turkey confirming the deployment of a US Patriot air defense system to its Malatya province. The international community is reacting, with China’s foreign ministry announcing the safe return of over 10,000 Chinese citizens from several Middle Eastern countries.
Iran has also accused the European Union of “hypocrisy” for its silence regarding a reported school attack in the Iranian city of Minab, further complicating the diplomatic landscape.
