US-Israel Strikes Escalate as Iran Warns of War Crimes, Rejects Ceasefire

US-Israel Strikes Escalate as Iran Warns of War Crimes, Rejects Ceasefire

Amid a severe escalation in hostilities, Iran has forcefully rejected claims by former US President Donald Trump that it sought a ceasefire, while warning that any attack on its Bushehr nuclear power plant would constitute a “war crime.” The developments come as Tehran reports widespread destruction from US-Israeli strikes, including damage to 33,000 homes and the targeting of a historic medical research institute.

Diplomatic and Military Posturing Intensifies

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei stated the country would not tolerate a “vicious cycle” of war, negotiations, and ceasefire, following a warning from Trump for Tehran to agree to a deal. Concurrently, Iranian Army Commander-in-Chief Amir Hatami ordered operational headquarters to monitor enemy movements with “utmost pessimism” and prepare to counter any attack, vowing that no enemy troops would survive a ground operation.

Warnings Over Nuclear Facilities and Regional Fallout

In a significant statement to AFP, Iran’s envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Reza Najafi, declared that a strike on the Bushehr nuclear plant would be a war crime under international law. He also denied reports that Iran had restarted uranium enrichment following strikes on its nuclear facilities in June 2025.

The conflict’s regional impact was underscored by China, which blamed US and Israeli attacks as the “root cause” of the blockage in the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Beijing, along with other nations, has called for an immediate cessation of military operations.

Mounting Humanitarian and Infrastructure Toll

The human and physical cost of the conflict is rising sharply within Iran:

  • Tehran Damage: A spokesperson for the Tehran mayor’s office reported strikes have impacted approximately 33,000 homes, with damage ranging from broken windows to structures requiring full reconstruction. Nearly 1,900 families are facing housing challenges.
  • Cultural and Industrial Targets: Iran’s Health Ministry reported an attack severely damaged the century-old Pasteur Institute in Tehran, calling it a “direct assault on international health security.” Additionally, a major steel company official stated that reconstruction of a damaged factory using radioactive sources could take up to a year.
  • Domestic Crackdown: Amid the external conflict, Iran’s judiciary executed a man convicted for an attack on a military facility during the January anti-government protests, signaling an ongoing internal crackdown.

International Reactions and Diplomacy

The crisis has spurred diplomatic activity. China has urged all parties to cease military operations to prevent further impact on the global economy and energy security. Meanwhile, diplomatic discussions are underway, as evidenced by a call between Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Egypt’s Foreign Minister to address the escalating Middle East situation.

As threats and warnings continue to mount from all sides, the path to de-escalation appears fraught, with Iran positioning itself for a prolonged conflict and the international community growing increasingly concerned over the widening repercussions.
