PM Shehbaz Urges Restraint Amid US-Iran Ceasefire Violations

PM Shehbaz Urges Restraint Amid US-Iran Ceasefire Violations

Diplomatic Success Under Strain

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif issued a urgent appeal for restraint on Wednesday, warning that reported violations of the newly brokered US-Iran ceasefire undermine the fragile peace process. The premier’s call comes less than 24 hours after Pakistan’s mediation successfully paused a six-week war that had killed thousands and disrupted global energy markets.

Violations Reported, Diplomacy Urged

“I earnestly and sincerely urge all parties to exercise restraint and respect the ceasefire for two weeks, as agreed upon, so that diplomacy can take a lead role towards peaceful settlement of the conflict,” PM Shehbaz stated in a post on X. His statement followed reports from Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who raised allegations of “ceasefire violations” by Israel in communications with Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir.

Islamabad to Host Crucial Talks

In a significant diplomatic move, PM Shehbaz announced he has invited leadership from both the United States and Iran to Islamabad on April 10 to negotiate a conclusive agreement. This follows the two-week ceasefire mediated by Pakistan, which was agreed upon just hours before a US deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

A Changed Pakistan’s Diplomatic Victory

Addressing a federal cabinet meeting, a triumphant PM Shehbaz declared that Pakistan has emerged as a nation viewed with new respect on the global stage. “Today, Pakistan is a changed country that is viewed with respect across the world,” he said, as cabinet members welcomed him with applause. He emphasized that while the ceasefire was a first step, “our destination is lasting peace.”

Unified Efforts Behind the Breakthrough

The Prime Minister credited Pakistan’s political and military leadership for remaining united during the crisis. He specifically praised Deputy PM Ishaq Dar, the Foreign Office, and CDF Asim Munir for their tireless efforts in engaging with US and Iranian leadership. “If these efforts had not been made, we would not have achieved this diplomatic success,” he added.

International Support Acknowledged

PM Shehbaz expressed gratitude to both Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and US President Donald Trump for accepting the ceasefire request. He also thanked Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, the UAE, Malaysia, Qatar, Kuwait, and China for supporting Pakistan’s peace efforts. The premier concluded with cautious optimism: “These flames have been extinguished for two weeks, and, if Allah Almighty wills, they will be put out permanently.”
