PCB Chief to Consult PM on Allowing PSL 11 Spectators

Naqvi Vows to Push for Spectators Amid Global Crisis Considerations

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi announced on Monday that he will again approach Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to request permission for spectators to attend matches in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 11. The decision comes after the tournament was initially held behind closed doors as part of government austerity measures linked to regional instability.

Balancing Security and Tournament Atmosphere

Naqvi emphasized the board’s commitment to bringing fans back to stadiums, stating, “I will speak again to the prime minister regarding the crowd.” However, he acknowledged the need to consider the ongoing global crisis stemming from the Middle East conflict, which has prompted heightened security and economic precautions.

The PCB had earlier restricted PSL 11 to just two venues—Karachi and Lahore—and barred spectators to reduce public movement and align with government austerity plans. These measures were a response to the global fuel crisis exacerbated by the US-Israel-Iran conflict.

Franchise Pressure and Financial Assurance

Several franchise owners have publicly appealed for the return of spectators, arguing that fan presence is integral to the league’s atmosphere and commercial viability. Their appeals were directed at both the prime minister and chief ministers.

In a move to address franchise concerns, Naqvi confirmed that teams would receive gate money, with the PCB covering related expenses. He also ruled out any changes to the tournament schedule, ensuring the league’s continuity despite the ongoing discussions.

Infrastructure and Security Acknowledgments

Beyond attendance issues, Naqvi revealed plans to review and potentially rebuild the National Bank Cricket Arena to enhance facilities. He also praised law enforcement agencies for ensuring the smooth conduct of PSL 11 amid challenging circumstances.

The PCB’s efforts reflect a delicate balance between security protocols and preserving the vibrant spirit of Pakistan’s premier T20 league, as stakeholders await the government’s final decision on spectator attendance.
