The United States military has commenced a blockade of ships departing Iranian ports, President Donald Trump announced Monday, escalating tensions after weekend peace talks collapsed. Global oil prices surged back above $100 per barrel following the announcement, with analysts warning of no quick resolution to the unprecedented disruption of shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. The vital waterway, which normally carries one-fifth of the world’s oil, has been effectively shut by Iran since the conflict began on February 28, permitting passage only under Iranian control and subject to a toll.
“We can’t let a country blackmail or extort the world,” President Trump stated at the White House, asserting that Iran had been in contact seeking a deal. He reiterated that any agreement must prevent Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
