Trump Administration Pledges $1 Billion in Security Aid to Colombia

Trump Administration Pledges $1 Billion in Security Aid to Colombia

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration announced plans on Friday to deliver a massive $1 billion security assistance package to the government of Colombia’s newly inaugurated right-wing President Abelardo De La Espriella, signaling a sharp pivot in U.S. policy toward Latin America.

The State Department confirmed the move in a formal statement, framing it as a cornerstone of a revitalized bilateral partnership. “Working with Congress, the United States intends to announce $1 billion in assistance as part of a security package to support President De La Espriella’s Administration in achieving our shared goals,” the statement read.

A New Alliance and a Crackdown Pledge

De La Espriella, who was sworn in on Friday, campaigned on promises of a sweeping crackdown on crime and an ambitious economic revival. His rise to power was openly endorsed by former President Donald Trump during the elections, creating a stark contrast with the previous administration.

The State Department further revealed that Colombia has been welcomed into the “Shield of the Americas,” a military alliance conceived by Trump that unites right-wing leaders in a common pledge to combat drug trafficking. This move is the latest in a series of actions by Trump to aggressively expand U.S. presence and influence across the region.

From Feud to Partnership

The new partnership represents a dramatic departure from the openly hostile relationship Trump had with former Colombian President Gustavo Petro. Petro, a former rebel and the nation’s first leftist president, frequently clashed with Trump on multiple fronts.

Petro had accused Trump of being “complicit in genocide” over U.S. ally Israel’s military assault on Gaza and demanded “criminal proceedings” over American military strikes on boats in Caribbean waters. He also vocally criticized Trump’s direct endorsement of De La Espriella during the electoral process.

Controversial Regional Tactics

Trump’s intensified focus on Latin America has been marked by controversial military actions. These include ordering a deadly raid to seize ousted Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and launching multiple U.S. military strikes on vessels in the Caribbean that have resulted in dozens of fatalities.

While Trump characterizes these operations as necessary measures to counter drug trafficking and illegal immigration, they have drawn fierce condemnation. Rights advocates in the U.S. and globally have denounced the actions as illegal, imperialistic, and tantamount to extrajudicial killings.
