Arrest Follows Surge of Suspicious Wildfires
A 45-year-old agricultural worker has been placed in pre-trial detention after confessing to igniting a string of fires that stretched across the departments of Deux-Sèv and Maine-et-Loire. The suspect was apprehended on Friday, August 7, near several active fire outbreaks, carrying a blowtorch in his vehicle.
The Niort public prosecutor’s office confirmed on Sunday that the man will face an immediate trial on Tuesday. He has been charged with destruction of property by means dangerous to persons, a serious offense reflecting the potential risk to human life.
Caught Red-Handed in Forest Hotspot
Gendarmes on patrol arrested the suspect in the Brignon forest, an area straddling the communes of Nueil-sur-Layon and Saint-Macaire-du-Bois in Maine-et-Loire. The arrest occurred shortly after a fresh fire broke out on Friday afternoon. According to local reports, the man is originally from the Thouars region.
During police custody, the suspect admitted not only to the fires set on Friday but also to multiple other blazes in the preceding days. Investigators stated that several of these incidents had required the deployment of significant firefighting resources, highlighting the scale of the danger posed.
A Region on Edge
The arrest comes as northern Deux-Sèvres and southern Maine-et-Loire grapple with a wave of suspicious wildfires. Just this Friday, three separate fires were reported in the commune of Val-en-Vignes, in the Thouarsais area, adding to growing public concern.
The case underscores the severe legal consequences for arson, particularly in rural regions where dry conditions can rapidly escalate small fires into major blazes. The immediate trial will determine the full extent of the charges and the corresponding penalties.
