Pakistan Names First Lunar Rover Jinnah-1 for 2029 Moon Mission

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan’s space agency has officially named the country’s first lunar rover “Jinnah-1,” marking a significant step in its growing space exploration ambitions. The rover is scheduled to travel to the Moon in 2029 aboard China’s Chang’e-8 mission, where it will conduct scientific research at the lunar south pole.

The Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) announced the name following a nationwide competition that drew more than 4,000 proposals from across Pakistan. Seven participants independently suggested “Jinnah-1,” and a draw selected 17-year-old Tayyab Karim from Bahawalnagar as the official winner.

A Name Honoring the Nation’s Founder

SUPARCO’s chairman said the name pays tribute to Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan. Speaking at the naming ceremony, he emphasized that “Jinnah-1” represents Pakistan’s determination, progress, and new horizons in space exploration.

The is entirely Pakistani-built and will focus on studying plasma, radiation, and the geography of the lunar surface. Its mission also includes experiments relevant to future lunar research and the potential for sustained human presence on the Moon.

Scientific Goals at the Moon’s South Pole

The Chang’e-8 mission, led by the China National Space Administration, is designed as a precursor to an international lunar research station. Pakistan’s participation places it among a select group of nations contributing hardware to lunar exploration.

Key objectives for Jinnah-1 include:

  • Analyzing plasma and radiation environments near the lunar south pole
  • Mapping surface geography and terrain features
  • Conducting experiments to support future human missions
  • Testing Pakistani-built rover technology in extreme lunar conditions

A Milestone for Pakistan’s Space Sector

SUPARCO officials described Jinnah-1 as an important milestone in Pakistan’s journey of space exploration. The rover is expected to open new avenues in the country’s scientific and technological sectors, providing hands-on experience in deep-space mission operations.

The collaboration with China builds on Pakistan’s earlier satellite launches and strengthens bilateral cooperation in space science. Once deployed, Jinnah-1 will operate autonomously on the lunar surface, transmitting data back to Earth for analysis by Pakistani scientists and engineers.

With this mission, Pakistan joins a growing list of nations pursuing lunar exploration, signaling a long-term commitment to space research and technological self-reliance.
