Google has announced plans to provide students across Pakistan with a complimentary one-year subscription to its Gemini AI service. The initiative was unveiled by Wilson White, Google’s Vice President, during an event on Tuesday marking the opening of the company’s first local office in Islamabad.
White confirmed that the formal rollout of the student subscription program is expected to be detailed later this week. The move is designed to equip Pakistani learners with advanced artificial intelligence tools for education, research, and skill development.
Alignment with Pakistan’s Digital Growth Agenda
During his address, White emphasized that Google’s objectives for Pakistan resonate with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s vision of transforming the country into a $30 billion IT export hub. He noted that Google has already contributed more than Rs3.9 trillion in economic activity for local businesses and households over the past decade.
White further highlighted that Google’s ecosystem has supported over 960,000 jobs in Pakistan during the same period. He described the latest developments as only the beginning of the tech giant’s long-term commitment to the country.
Government Welcomes Google’s Expansion
Following the announcement, Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja welcomed Google’s arrival in Pakistan through a post on social media platform X. Her remarks underscored the government’s support for private-sector investment in digital infrastructure and education.
Once launched, the free Gemini subscription is expected to give Pakistani students access to Google’s AI-powered tools for learning, research, and other educational purposes, potentially reducing barriers to advanced digital literacy.

The initiative could mark a significant step in democratizing access to generative AI in emerging markets. Analysts suggest that providing students with no-cost access to Gemini may accelerate adoption of AI-assisted learning across universities and secondary schools in Pakistan.
