Imran Khan Medically Fit, Back in Adiala Jail

Imran Khan Medically Fit, Back in Adiala Jail

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan was declared medically fit by a team of specialists after a comprehensive examination at a hospital in the federal capital, Federal Minister Attaullah Tarar said on Friday. The former prime minister was subsequently returned to Adiala Jail under tight security.

In a statement shared on his official social media account, Tarar confirmed that Khan was taken to the hospital during the night between August 20 and 21, 2026, following a Supreme Court directive. The minister said the examination was conducted under appropriate security arrangements.

Specialist Team Conducts Thorough Evaluation

According to Tarar, a team of qualified doctors—including specialists in ophthalmology, cardiology, and general medicine—carried out a detailed medical assessment of the former prime minister. The team ultimately declared him medically fit.

The minister also noted that Khan’s sister, Uzma Khan, remained present throughout the medical examination and treatment process. After the procedures were completed, Khan was transferred back to Adiala Jail at approximately 5:00 a.m. on August 21.

Security Tightened During Hospital Visit

Jail sources confirmed that Khan was moved back to his cell by police under stringent security measures. He had been shifted to Shifa Hospital late Thursday night, with large contingents of police deployed outside the facility to ensure safety.

Sources indicated that arrangements for the PTI founder’s treatment had been finalized in advance, and a dedicated team of doctors was formed to oversee his medical examination.

Supreme Court Order and Government Response

The hospital visit came after the Supreme Court of Pakistan earlier this week directed the government to move Khan from jail to a medical facility. A three-judge bench ordered that he be taken to Shifa Hospital in Islamabad within 48 hours.

The government subsequently filed a review petition challenging the court’s interim order. However, the Supreme Court Registrar’s Office raised objections to the petition and returned it, citing that it was submitted without a complete record.

The petition, filed by the Islamabad chief commissioner through the Islamabad advocate general, argued that the order directing Imran Khan’s transfer to the hospital exceeded the court’s jurisdiction and therefore required reconsideration.
