Army Deployment in Rawalpindi Approved for Six Months

Army Deployment in Rawalpindi Approved for Six Months

ISLAMABAD – The federal government has formally approved the deployment of Pakistan Army troops in Rawalpindi for a period of six months, authorizing military support to bolster law and order operations in the garrison city.

The decision, made under Article 245 of the Constitution, follows a formal request from the Punjab Home Department, which had approached the Ministry of Interior seeking military assistance for enhanced security arrangements.

Scope of the Deployment

According to official sources, three companies of the Pakistan Army — comprising more than 400 personnel — will be stationed in Rawalpindi. The troops will operate in coordination with the district administration to strengthen security protocols and maintain public order.

The deployment is designed to reinforce civilian law enforcement capabilities rather than replace them. Military personnel will assist civil authorities in managing potential emergencies and maintaining stability across key urban areas.

Security Focus Areas

Under the approved plan, security will be intensified at sensitive locations and along major road networks. The army’s presence is intended to serve as a deterrent against any untoward incidents while providing rapid response capacity if required.

The six-month authorization reflects a time-bound approach, with the military operating under the legal framework that governs such deployments. This marks a significant coordination effort between federal and provincial authorities to address security concerns in one of Pakistan’s most strategically important cities.
